About Me

Zappa joined Poudre School District after working as an administrator and teacher in the Thompson School District for several years. His latest job was at Walt Clark Middle School where he served as assistant principal since 2019. Prior to that, he was a professional learning coach for Thompson educators and administrators, providing trainings and support related to standards-based instruction and educational technology.

An educator at heart, Zappa began his career in the classroom as a Social Studies and English Language Arts teacher at middle schools in the Thompson and St. Vrain Valley School Districts, teaching from 2010-17. During this time, he took on additional leadership roles to support staff including as a social studies curriculum coordinator, an educational technology coach and a literacy trainer of teachers. He also expanded his connections with students beyond the regular school day, passing on his love of running as the head coach of cross country and track and field programs for several years.

When asked why he became a teacher, Zappa said it was his experience as a student and the impact his teachers had on him that inspired him to teach and make education his career.

“As a student, teachers and coaches motivated me to learn and helped me find my place in school.  I became an educator to do the same,” he said. “My daily goal is to ensure that each student feels they belong and are excited to achieve as a member of their school community.”

Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools Scott Nielsen is excited about the energy and enthusiasm Zappa will bring to PSD and the Blevins staff.

“He has a strong belief in culture, and I believe will work diligently with the entire Blevins community to enhance what students experience during their time as a Bruin,” said Nielsen.

Zappa has a Master of Education degree in Instructional Technology from Regis University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history and teaching license from California State University, Fullerton. He acquired his principal licensure from Colorado State University.

Outside of work, Zappa enjoys running, reading and gardening. While he has lived in Colorado for 13 years, he is originally from southern California and remains a faithful fan to the baseball and basketball teams (“Go Dodgers and Lakers!”) from his home state.

Zappa and his wife have two daughters (a 6- and 4-year-old), and two cats. As a family, they enjoy fishing and exploring “this beautiful state.”
